Project Overview
As part of Metro Vancouver’s commitment to protecting public health and the environment, the Front Street Sewer Upgrade will take place at the intersection of Columbia Street and Front Street in the City of New Westminster this spring. This upgrade will provide additional sewer system reliability and capacity in order to accommodate projected population growth in New Westminster, Coquitlam, Port Moody, Burnaby and Port Coquitlam.
This work will involve the construction of three large sewer pipes and two underground chambers. As a result, a small section of Front Street will be closed to all traffic (please see map below), with a short detour on Begbie Street. The work is scheduled to take place at an accelerated rate with a fixed deadline in order to reduce the construction time and minimize impacts to the community, commuter and truck traffic.
Schedule & Hours of Work
Construction is scheduled to begin in April 2018 and take approximately six months to complete.
Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are asked to pay close attention to all construction signage and to follow the direction of traffic control personnel. Bus routes along Columbia Street may experience delays but are expected to function as usual.
Noise & Odour
All work will comply with City of New Westminster noise bylaws or granted bylaw variances. Where practical, crews will attempt to reduce noise impacts. There may be some occasional temporary odour associated with this work. Mitigation measures will be in place to reduce odour as much as possible.
Community Liaison Officer
A Community Liaison Officer (CLO) has been assigned to this project who will be available on an ongoing basis to provide project updates. The CLO will meet with businesses prior to construction to discuss the project impacts, compile resident feedback and be available by phone to address any questions or concerns. Local residents and businesses will receive ongoing notification through newsletters, web updates, email and on site signage.
